Detroit Pistons

I got to tag along to a Pistons game with Gunnar and Douglas' cub scout pack yesterday. The game was fun, but since the Pistons already have the best record in the East they didn't have anything to gain by winning and decided to rest their starters for most of the game.

The kids followed the game and cheered for the Pistons, but as the game wore on the bench players just weren't up to the task and the good guys slowly slid further and further behind so the fourth quarter wasn't all that interesting.

Not surprisingly their favorite parts of the day were the kids clinic before the game where they got to practice basketball skills on the Palace court (Gunnar even made a basket), and the surfboard ride they got to try out before the game started.

It was pretty much like a bull ride but the kids were standing on a rocking surfboard instead of riding a bull. The longer they could stay on, the faster the guy would make it go until they finally lost their balance and fell off. Since it was free and the only requirement was signing a form agreeing that if your kid got injured it just meant he was a klutz and it wasn't anyone's fault but his, we decided to throw them on.

Gunnar did good and was finally thrown off. Then it was Douglas' turn and in typical Douglas style he tried to figure out a way to stay on forever. This is what he came up with:

It was a good idea while it lasted, but he still ended up falling off. He's just lucky he didn't smash his face on the board while it was rocking him around.

ONE LAST THING: The kids all got free Chris Webber jerseys which came with the mandatory advertising on the back of course. The really cool part was that they also received free Pistons blankets. The blankets contained no advertising at all! Has anyone ever been to a sporting event with giveaways that didn't have advertising on them? I know I haven't. It made the blankets a whole lot nicer and I could actually see using them.
